About Us

New Hampshire’s Tobacco Prevention & Control Program (TPCP) implements tobacco control strategies recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Best Practices. These strategies include state and community interventions, health communication interventions, cessation interventions, surveillance and evaluation and administrative and management infrastructure.

New Hampshire’s Tobacco Prevention & Control Program goals are to:

  • Prevent initiation of tobacco use among young people
  • Eliminate non-smokers’ exposure to secondhand smoke
  • Promote smoking cessation among adults and young people
  • Identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities

TPCP’s program is funded by a cooperative agreement through the CDC/Office on Smoking and Health and the State of New Hampshire General Fund.

TPCP is a program of the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health Services.

NH Tobacco Helpline Success Rates

At the NH Tobacco Helpline, 88% of quitters surveyed between 7/1/2013 and 6/30/2014, were satisfied with the Helpline staff and counseling they received. They also felt the Helpline staff increased their motivation to stop using tobacco (85%) and that the Helpline met their quitting needs (79%). If needed, 91% said they would contact the Helpline again and 96% said they would recommend it to a friend.

  • 29% of those surveyed were able to quit for at least 30 days after speaking with the Helpline.
  • 19% of those surveyed are currently NOT smoking at all! Congratulations to them!

(National successful quit rates are about 6%. The average person makes 7 – 10, or more quit attempts before being completely quit—it’s all part of the process of quitting smoking and learning new behavior.)
